Another ice castle
Not long ago I posted a pair of frozen drops with crystals – here’s a single one at higher magnification:
I used the nearly the maximum magnification I can get with the MP-E lens, around 4x or 5x, and blended together 10 images to get more depth of field. The etched lines on the surface were what attracted me to this drop.

Nice shot and patience putting 10 images together.
It certainly did take patience. It is a bother, but it’s the only way to pull an image like this off at this magnification. There’s too much loss of sharpness from diffraction at 5x – F4 or F5.6 are the limit. It’s worth the effort for an unusual sight like this.
Wow its amazing.
This is really a very cool structure worthy of your efforts which paid off handsomely, Tom. Fantastic image.
I wish it weren’t so tedious to do. Thanks for the kind words…
Wow!!!!!
Amazing! I never would have guessed you combine images…brilliant!
This is amazing, Tom. Fantastic creation of Mother Nature captured with stunning details.
This just blows my mind Tom when I think about how close this is and the attention to detail that a 10 image blend must take.
Simply amazing and beautiful! I just learned about the stacking feature to improve depth of field with photoshop, and I”m anxious to try it out soon. Great post, thanks!
Wow and you got an amazing result. It is simply wonderful!
Incredible work Thomas…I need to check back with you more often you work is amazing !!
Tom…..Awesome shot!!!! Love the detail. It was well worth the extra time you put into the processing.
Thanks! The detail is the thing – glad you think I succeeded!
Steve pointed out this photo to me because I’ve recently played with the MP-E, too. This is a great shot and I really appreciate the effort it takes to create such a photo.
Well done, Tom!
Thanks for the kind words. The mp-e is awonderful lens, but it does take some time to get to know.
