Heath aster

24Oct09

There are only a few flowers left these days, mostly asters in protected spots – blue asters, heath asters, other white asters. Here’s a series of images of one tiny heath aster, around 10mm across.
Shooting wide open gives a dreamy, minimalist  look and hides the imperfections in the flower. Click a thumbnail to view a [...]

Watkins Glen

11Oct09

A waterfall image from my last trip to the Ithaca area, two falls in the narrow Watkins Glen gorge:

This looks lonely and wild, but it’s a high traffic area.  Lots of people walk through the gorge on a path built into the rock, out of sight, on the left.  The worst part is that passersby [...]

Meadow sunset

17Sep09

Foxtails in sunset light – the sunlight was filtering through the woods in the distance:

Aster and dew

14Sep09

The beginning of fall color – in a small way:

One of the glories of the fall – a pretty flower that fades quickly. A closeup like this hides the parts of teh flower that age fast.

Lace

22Aug09

A Queen Anne’s lace flower, just opening:

They are plain, but my eye is drawn to the lines and curves.

Spiderwort (Tradescantia) is a midsummer flower with vivid colors (some purple, some pink), and three petals. When you look closely, the flower center has three elements: a straight pistil, a group of yellow-orange anthers, and surrounding them, feathery filaments. In this image, I caught the filaments in a drop after a rain:

Taken with my high [...]

Daisies

10Jun09

Just some common June flowers in a meadow:

Not as colorful as some spring flowers, but groups of them are a beautiful sight.

Wood Poppy

19May09

A wood poppy from this spring:

I took this a few minutes after the fern image in my last post.  It was a great morning – overcast light, not much wind. I’ve never captured the prickliness of wood poppies before.  This is a pretty typical threesome, they don’t all bloom at once. Either there are  buds [...]

White hepatica

26Apr09

More hepatica from Ithaca, NY. This image shows the scene at shoestring level:

Just a face in the crowd of hepatica.
It warmed up this weekend in Massachusetts – more spring butterflies are in flight, including the diminutive elfins, spring azures, and other butterflies.

Another look at a crocus, this time a petal. In this image, there’s hardly any detail, just line, light, and color:

I had to duck raindrops and wait between gusts of wind to take this – it’s been blustery around here lately.
