A damselfly from a recent trip to Cape Cod:

I stayed in Wellfleet, which has more than a dozen freshwater ponds, great habitat for damselfies like this one.


A closeup of a perching Variable Dancer about to pounce on an insect:

This insect gave me lots of interesting poses, all more or less cat-like. This is pretty close, the damselfly is a bit more than an inch long.

I was at Cape Cod last week, the freshwater kettle ponds are a great place for colorful damselflies. Here’s a closeup of a Variable Dancer (Argia fumipennis):
