Cataract Falls

06Nov09

Last week I visited Cataract Falls Trail on the north slopes of Mt. Tamalpais (Marin Co., California). There were literally dozens of falls along the mile or so of the trail, the tallest around 20 or 30 feet. Here’s a smaller cascade:

The trail was narrow and went straight up, 1100 feet in the first half [...]

I visited Ithaca again recently and returned to Enfield Glen and Lucifer Falls. Here’s another look at Lucifer Falls on a nice cloudy day:

It’s an extraordinary place. Besides the water, the rock strata and foliage are beautiful – the flowers in the foreground are boneset and Joe Pye Weed.

Lucifer Falls

12Jul09

Lucifer Falls starts just a few feet away from the last cascade. It’s more than 100 feet, a tumble down the rocky gorge, not a vertical fall. This is the upper part of the falls, the vertical part. It continues down the rocks for some ways at an angle:

The light was much better in the [...]

Last week I made it back to Ithaca, NY, and visited a few waterfalls. I saw Taughannock Falls, a 130 foot vertical drop from a cliff into a wide rocky basin. The other waterfall site I made it to was Lucifer Falls, in the Upper Gorge area in Robert H Treman State Park. Enfield Creek [...]

A mass of the feathery crystals – these were growing on a snow-covered rock by the brook:

When I took this it was 8  F – now it’s in the 30s F. Balmy by comparison, if not quite spring.

Another image of the same brook, on a different day, showing a longer course of water:

Icy Cascade

09Jan09

An icy cascade in a brook:

Just a small part of a one foot high waterfall. A long exposure in early morning light. I’m learning to love the opportunities that come for photography in winter.

Green ripples

26Aug08

Ever since I posted the Winter reflection image I wanted to try a similar image with green water color from forest leaves. I found the right place – a branch of a forest stream after a rain – and made this image of water ripples:

Not quite a parallel image to the winter one, but a [...]

Bubble blur

30Mar08

Another brook image, but one of a very different character than the others. This is a long exposure of a small patch of bubbles, spinning around in an eddy in the stream. There were highlights on one side from late afternoon sunshine and the blue sky gave the water its hue:

The exposure was 1.6 seconds. [...]

I can’t stay away, I’m entranced with the water at this place. Spring is just beginning, it’s still quite cold, but I can hear a change in the bird’s songs, and the brooks is rushing with the spring rains and snow melt.

Unfortunately I’ve spent way too much time lately trying to recover from hard [...]
