Mantis

Fall is the season for mantises – full-size katydids and tree crickets, too:

This was a really big bug (3 or 4 inches long) with a small head. Images of the full bug would have had a cluttered background, so I tried head and shoulders portraits with 2X teleconverter with this result. If I waved my hand it at it, it looked at me fixedly like this. So far, this is the only mantis I’ve run into this season.
