Ice shapes

When it freezes, the water in slow moving streams makes neat curving shapes and bubble patterns. Ice art! I spent a happy morning last week walking along a stream called Clematis Brook finding all sorts of beautiful ice shapes. Click a thumbnail to see a larger image:

In the first two, the water froze in small, dense white crystals. In the last, the water froze clear. The first pair have sinuous curves and bright tones, and the last has much more contrast. These were taken in spots only a few yards apart. This afternoon I was out in another area in a frozen over swamp – I found some swamp cabbage spouts already out. Spring is just a month or so away here.
