A closeup of a katydid – I think Oblong-winged katydid:


Taken at about 3x magnification. This is an upstate NY bug – I went back to Ithaca a few days back. Here in Mass, I’ve seen only juvenile katydids this season, not mature ones like this one.

    • Ed, this was an image with the MP-E 1-5x lens. I had pretty nice overcast light, but this lens is a black hole for light. I had to use ISO 1250 to get a shutter speed of 1/50 at this magnification. The closer you get, the slower the shutter – by around 4 stops.

  1. Great picture. I find 3x incredibly hard to shoot hand held. It often takes dozens of shots to get that optimum depth of focus zone correct. Thankfully, thanks to digital, I don’t waste film now!
