Baltimore Checkerspot pair
Mating Baltimore Checkerspot butterflies:
Baltimore checkerspots aren’t a rare butterfly, but the are “local,” only found in certain spots or locales. You may never see this striking butterfly unless you find or learn about a Baltimore location. If you’d like to find them, join a local chapter of the North American Butterfly Association (www.naba.org). In Massachusetts, you can go to a field trip sponsored by the Massachusetts Butterfly Club to learn more about this butterfly (www.massbutterflies.org). Baltimores have a short flight period of a few weeks, most years in late June to mid-July. This year they flew early.
Some day I’ll find a pair in the open with a better background – until then this will have to do.
