Frost crystals on leaves

Frost on leaves in a shallow stream:

It had been a cold night, well below freezing, so I went out hoping to see this shallow stream frozen. At a glance, I could see it was still flowing. So I found some nice looking crystals in pockets and holes near the stream instead. Then I looked back at the stream more closely and found more crystals growing on the leaves – I had just a few minutes before the sun made them disappear.

  1. Yeah, these don’t last long. We had a lot of rime here the other day, but I was recovering from back spasms and couldn’t shoot them. Of course, they were gone the next morning.
The crystals do dress up those leaves well.

    • Sorry to read about your back! Frost crystals like these seem to evaporate by midmorning, at the latest. When the sun touches them, they are gone. You may see some crystals persist in hollows where the sun doesn’t reach…
